Green Fork

The Green Fork is one of the three great tributaries that form the Trident, rising in the swamps of the Neck before cutting across much of the Riverlands.
Armies, merchants and ferries have crossed its banks for centuries, and its name is tied to more than one armed episode in the history of Westeros.
Chapter 1
The river before the dragons

The Green Fork runs stained with moss from the swamps of the Neck, where it rises, and that colour is what gives it its name.
In the days of the Ironborn kings of the Isles and the Rivers, ironmen sailed up the Trident and its tributaries to fall quickly on the lands they were conquering.
Some six hundred years earlier, the Freys began raising a great bridge over the river, at the very stretch where it runs deepest and fastest.
Ser Franklyn Frey lived along those banks, and was one of the few of his house who earned the smallfolk's affection.
Chapter 2
In the shadow of dragons

Aemond TargaryenDuring the War of Conquest, Sharra Arryn offered Aegon the Conqueror an alliance: her support in exchange for the lands between the Green Fork and the Mountains of the Moon. The Targaryens turned the offer down.
Generations later, during the Dance of the Dragons, Prince Aemond Targaryen rode Vhagar against the riverside town of Sauce Dulce, on the banks of the same river.

Tyrion LannisterRobb Stark led his army toward the Twins to seal an alliance between House Stark and House Frey. He crossed the Green Fork with the cavalry while Lord Roose Bolton marched south with the infantry along the eastern bank.
On the way to Riverrun, Tyrion Lannister saw the fields along the river burned and laid waste. Shortly after, Lord Tywin Lannister defeated Roose Bolton's forces at the Battle of the Green Fork.

The river after the wedding

Catelyn StarkRobb Stark, by then proclaimed King of the Trident, brought his army back to the Twins for the wedding of Edmure Tully and Roslin Frey, with the river running high from the rains.
The wedding ended in betrayal. Ser Raynald Westerling, wounded, was last seen throwing himself into the Green Fork, and soon after Catelyn Tully's naked body was found floating in its waters, a mockery by the Freys of Tully funeral customs.

The river's course

The Green Fork rises in the swamps of the Neck, with Greywater Watch at its easternmost headwater, and takes in two tributaries just north of the Twins.
From there it runs southeast, roughly parallel to the Kingsroad, through fertile valleys, woods, castles and towns of the Riverlands.
Further south it takes in a tributary flowing down from the Mountains of the Moon, and near Lord Harroway's Town it meets the Blue Fork; together with the Red Fork it forms the Trident.
Robb Stark held that there was no crossing between Ruby Ford and the Twins, though a ferry still ran at Lord Harroway's Town.
