Isle of Tears

la Isla de las Lágrimas

The Isle of Tears is one of the Basilisk Isles, off the northern coast of Sothoryos in the Summer Sea: a land of broken valleys and black bogs among hills of flint.

On its southern coast lie the ruins of Gogossos, once a Ghiscari colony that passed into the hands of the Valyrian Freehold and ended up as a dumping ground for prisoners, until a plague left it almost empty.

Chapter 1

Flint and bogs

Books only

The island rises among jagged hills of flint and wind-twisted rock, with deep valleys and black bogs hidden between them.

It sits among the other islands of the same archipelago: Point Basilisk to the west, Toad Isle to the northwest, and Claw Isle to the north.

Chapter 2

The ruins of Gogossos

Books only

On the island's southern coast there are traces of an ancient people from the Dawn Age; it is not known whether they survived until corsairs first reached the Basilisk Isles.

There too stand the ruins of Gogossos, a colony of the Ghiscari Empire once called Gorgai until the Valyrian Freehold conquered it. The Valyrians turned it into a place to send their prisoners.

During the Century of Blood, the Red Death struck the island and killed nine of every ten people there.

The physical world

  1. PositionWe worked it out

The position was inferred from the label on the base map rather than from a symbol of its own: it marks the area, not the point.

  2. NameThe sources disagree

The reading of the label on the base map is not certain. What was read was “ISLE OF TEARS”.
