Montañas norteñas
The northern mountains are the range that separates Winterfell from the Wall, a barrier of blue peaks and roadless valleys that only the clans who have lived there for generations know how to cross.
No one truly rules these mountains: the forty clans who live there worship the Old Gods and only come down to the lowland realms when it suits their own interests.
Chapter 1
A range with no roads

The range begins near Winterfell and climbs north until it meets the Shadow Tower, already on the Wall; beyond that it continues as the Frostfangs. To the west its foothills reach the Bay of Ice, and to the south they cross into the Wolfswood. On the eastern side they border the Long Lake and the wood where Last Hearth stands, and that is where the White Knife and the Last River rise. The Kingsroad runs alongside the mountains on the east.
The peaks hold deep blue lakes and pine forests that turn gold and red in the foothills come autumn, while higher up grey-green sentinels, spruce, and firs take over. The hills have fish and small game; further up hunting grows scarce, though there are still owls, eagles, and white goats, along with the shaggy garrons the clans breed. No road crosses the range: only goat trails.
Chapter 2
Forty clans under the Old Gods

About forty clans, large and small, live in the high valleys and mountain meadows. The Wulls are the most powerful, along with the Flints, the Norreys, the Burleys, the Harclays, the Liddles, and the Knotts. All of them worship the Old Gods. Wildlings from beyond the Wall raid the mountains now and then, and the shores of the Bay of Ice have suffered ironborn raids for generations.
In summer the Umbers drive their sheep flocks up to graze in the meadows on the peaks. Songs about these mountains and their people exist, among them Black Pines and Wolves in the Hills.
Chapter 3
The road along the mountains

Jon Snow
Tyrion LannisterJon Snow and Tyrion Lannister travel the Kingsroad from Winterfell to Castle Black, with the mountains at their side the whole way west. At first they see cliffs of flint, grey and steep, crowned with watchtowers. After five days of travel, the peaks change: jagged and snow-covered, a blue-grey that closes off the horizon like a wall.
Chapter 4
Bran's nameless valleys

Bran Stark and his companions do not take the Kingsroad to the Wall: they cross the northern mountains, where there are no roads through the twisted valleys. Bran knows the clans notice them passing, but also knows they will not be troubled as long as they leave the goats and horses alone. Along the whole way they meet only one person, a Liddle sheltering from icy rain in a shallow cave.
Chapter 5
The clans rise for Stannis

Stannis BaratheonOn Jon Snow's advice, Stannis Baratheon goes into the mountains and wins the support of the northern clans for his cause. With them at his side, he frees Deepwood Motte, in the Wolfswood.
