Volon Therys

Volon Therys is a walled city on the eastern bank of the Rhoyne, across from the ruins of Sar Mell, now under the authority of Volantis. It began as a colony of the Valyrian Freehold, and ever since has had an uneasy relationship with the river around it, which has turned against it more than once.

Centuries after those wars, the land outside its walls became the meeting place between an exile from Westeros and a company of sellswords whose agreement would set a campaign toward the west in motion.

Chapter 1

The Turtle War

Books only

Volon Therys began as a colony of the Valyrian Freehold, raised on the eastern bank of the Rhoyne across from where Sar Mell would later stand. Its closeness to that Rhoynar city soon turned into trouble: when the Valyrians slaughtered the river's giant turtles, the Rhoynar took it as an insult and answered with arms.

The First Turtle War lasted less than a moon's turn, but it was enough for Sar Mell to be stormed and burned. The answer came from the river itself: the Rhoynar water wizards called on its power against the Valyrian city, and the flood swallowed half of Volon Therys.

Chapter 2

The Second Spice War

Books only

Centuries later the city was a battlefield once more. The Rhoynar prince Garin marched to its gates after taking Selhorys and Valysar, and there met a Valyrian army of a hundred thousand men, a hundred war elephants, and three dragons.

Dragonfire burned thousands of his soldiers, though the Rhoynar managed to kill two of the beasts and drive off the third. Still no one won: the Mother Rhoyne rose in fury and swallowed Volon Therys again.

Chapter 3

The meeting with the Golden Company

Books only

As a possession of Volantis, the land outside Volon Therys was where Jon Connington met with the Golden Company, the band of sellswords exiled from Westeros. After debating it, the Company chose to back Aegon Targaryen.
