Addam Marbrand

When Catelyn Tully takes Tyrion Lannister prisoner, Lord Tywin summons his bannermen and marches into the Riverlands. Addam joins as commander of Lord Tywin's cavalry; his vanguard raids the area around the Twins and clashes with Frey soldiers in the war's first weeks.

When Robb Stark musters his bannermen and marches south, Addam's scouts spot the northern army and warn Lord Tywin, who orders him to fall back and join him. Part of Addam's forces meet Stark scouts led by Brynden Tully and are beaten, so Addam pulls his troops back as ordered; it is the success of Brynden's scouts, not that retreat, that lets the northern army split without being detected. Addam reports that Robb's forces were moving south to join the Freys.

Back with Lord Tywin, Addam is given command of the army's right flank at the Battle of the Green Fork, with three quarters of his lord's cavalry. The Lannister victory brings captures such as Harrion Karstark and Ser Wylis Manderly, though the prisoners confirm that Robb Stark has crossed at the Twins with the bulk of his army bound for Riverrun. At the war council that follows, Addam opposes trading prisoners and advises marching against the northerners; when Lord Tywin decides to stay with his family and send Tyrion to King's Landing as acting Hand of the King, Tyrion proposes Addam for the post, but his father insists it be Tyrion who goes.

During the occupation of Harrenhal, Addam commands Lord Tywin's scouts and is the first to leave the castle, a day after his lord. He then marches west with Tywin in an attempt to retake Riverrun, but is forced to retreat three times at the Battle of the Fords; that defeat lets the Lannisters learn in time of Stannis Baratheon's coming attack on King's Landing and rush the army to the capital. Addam distinguishes himself in the city's defense at the Battle of the Blackwater, and King Joffrey himself recognizes him for it.

After the battle, Lord Tywin names him Commander of the City Watch of King's Landing. Tyrion approves the choice, though Addam worries he cannot pay all 4,400 gold cloaks while the queen regent forbids dismissing any of them; Tywin, meanwhile, reproaches him for failing to find Tyrek Lannister, missing since the riot in King's Landing, and Addam insists on continuing the search, fearing his lord's anger.

He attends the wedding of Sansa Stark and Tyrion Lannister, and his men guard Joffrey I and the new queen Margaery Tyrell after the ceremony. When the king dies at his own wedding feast, Addam is the one who arrests Tyrion, his squire Podrick Payne, and Sansa's maids, and is left in charge of guarding Tyrion through the proceedings that follow; he is also assigned to the search for Sansa when she vanishes after the feast.

When Jaime Lannister returns to the capital, he asks Addam to help him practice swordplay with his left hand, trusting the discretion of a childhood friend. Addam beats him easily, disarming him three times and leaving him bruised.

Addam and the City Watch stand guard at Tywin Lannister's funeral. Now Lady of Casterly Rock, Cersei demands his loyalty while he tries to work out how Tyrion escaped, and Jaime puts him in charge of organizing the guards and having King Tommen I's food tasted before he eats it.

When Ser Kevan Lannister plans to leave the city, Jaime proposes Addam take his place, though he ends up bringing him along to Harrenhal instead, to recover prisoners and lift the siege of Riverrun. During the parley with Brynden Tully, Brynden mocks Jaime by assuming he will send Addam to fight a single combat in his stead; at the war council that follows, Addam suggests scaling the walls by night and opening the gates from within, a plan Walder Rivers dismisses because Brynden will not be fooled by it. When Brynden escapes the castle, it is Addam who leads the search south along the Red Fork of the Trident.
