Siege of Riverrun

Asedio de Aguasdulces

The siege of Riverrun was the campaign through which the Lannister-Frey alliance tried to close the chapter on House Tully in the War of the Five Kings. After the Red Wedding, the riverland castle stood as the last holdout, commanded by Ser Brynden Tully.

How it ended would settle who ruled Riverrun and how power in the region was divided.

After the Red Wedding

300 ACBooks only

In this chapterBrynden Tully

With the Red Wedding settled in favor of the Iron Throne, the riverlords surrendered one after another. Riverrun alone refused.

House Lannister allied with the Freys to stamp out that last pocket and hand the castle to Ser Emmon Frey, as their pact required.

Chapter 2

The siege drags on

300 ACBooks only

In this chapterEdmure Tully

Ser Daven Lannister, the new Warden of the West, took command of the siege. Brynden Tully, meanwhile, had emptied the castle of useless mouths and gathered what grain and livestock he could before shutting the gates.

Ser Ryman Frey brought Lord Edmure, held captive at the Twins, to the camp and threatened to hang him unless Riverrun yielded. He never carried it out, and the siege dragged on.

Chapter 3

Jaime takes command

300 ACBooks only

In this chapterJaime Lannister

Ser Jaime Lannister arrived with reinforcements and relieved Ryman Frey of command. He had Edmure brought before him and laid out, plainly, what awaited him if the troops took the castle by force.

Edmure agreed to speak with his uncle, and the next day he surrendered Riverrun — but not before letting Ser Brynden slip away.

Chapter 4

What the siege left behind

300 ACBooks only

In this chapterRobb Stark

Edmure was sent to Casterly Rock as a prisoner for life, with hope of being reunited there with his wife and newborn child. Jeyne Westerling, Robb Stark's widow, traveled with him.

Ryman Frey was found hanged shortly after, killer unknown. House Frey of Riverrun kept the castle, and Jaime rode on to Raventree Hall to settle the Blackwood-Bracken feud.

Chapter 5

A different ending, on screen

303 ACShow only

The show tells a different ending. Jaime Lannister arrives to take command of the siege while Walder Frey pushes for an assault on the Tully castle.

The castle falls after an assault in which Ser Brynden Tully dies, and Riverrun passes into Frey hands.
