House Harlaw of the Tower of Glimmering
Casa Harlaw de Torre del Resplandor
House Harlaw of the Tower of Glimmering is a noble house of the Iron Islands, sworn to House Harlaw and a cadet branch of the line seated at Ten Towers. Its seat is the Tower of Glimmering, on the isle of Harlaw, and its arms show a scythe girdled within an embattled border.
After the death of King Balon Greyjoy, the house is drawn into the succession dispute: Hotho Harlaw, its head, travels to Ten Towers to take part in the assembly that will choose who sits the throne.
Chapter 1
Hotho the Hunchback's bids for support
Books only
Hotho Harlaw travels to Ten Towers to back Asha Greyjoy's claim to the Iron Islands' throne after her father's death. Before the assembly convenes, he gives his cousin Lord Rodrik Harlaw a copy of Archmaester Marwyn's Book of Lost Books, hoping to soften him toward a marriage with his daughter.
During the assembly itself, Hotho switches sides and offers his support to Victarion Greyjoy, again in exchange for a marriage to his daughter. Victarion, seeking to bolster his own claim, argues that Hotho is Lord Rodrik's heir, even though Rodrik had earlier named his cousin Harras Harlaw the Knight instead. After hearing Euron Greyjoy's speech, Hotho turns to him as well.
Chapter 2
An heir by default
Books only
Later, at the feast celebrating the conquest of the Shield Islands, Hotho tells Victarion that it was Ser Harras Harlaw who took Gray Shield. When Euron Greyjoy, by then proclaimed king, names Harras lord of that island, the appointment itself removes him from the line of succession at Ten Towers.
With Harras out of the running, Hotho the Hunchback becomes Lord Rodrik Harlaw's new heir, and with it heir to the titles of Lord of the Ten Towers, Lord of Harlaw, and Harlaw of Harlaw.
