House Volmark

Casa Volmark de Volmark

House Volmark is a noble house of the Iron Islands, sworn to House Harlaw and seated at Volmark, on the isle of Harlaw. Its bloodline descends from the extinguished House Hoare, an origin its lords have invoked more than once to claim a standing above that of ordinary vassals.

That fallen royal blood has driven the house into episodes of rebellion and political ambition within the Iron Islands, from attempts to restore a lost throne to an open claim before the assembled captains and kings.

Chapter 1

The blood of the Hoares

Books only

House Volmark traces its line back to House Hoare through the female side: one of Qhorwyn the Wise's daughters married a Lord Volmark, and that union produced a grandson, Qhorin Volmark, who inherited more than the name.

When Harren Hoare died and the direct line of the iron kings died with him, Qhorin proclaimed himself King of the Iron Islands. The gesture cost him his life: Aegon I Targaryen put him down.

The black line's plot

33 ACBooks only

Decades later, in the year 33 AC, supporters of the Volmark black line schemed to crown Qhorin's son and win back the throne Aegon I had taken from the house by force.

The plot never came together. Lord Goren Greyjoy crushed it before it could grow into open rebellion.

During Aegon III's regency, ironborn raiders scourged the coasts of the Westerlands, and the outrage reached Casterly Rock itself. Lady Johanna, its lady, persuaded Ser Leo Costayne to carry the war back to the Iron Islands.

The Lannister fleet collected the debt in island blood. Among the dead of that reprisal was the Lord Volmark of Harlaw of the time.

In this chapterBalon Greyjoy

After Balon Greyjoy's death, Lord Maron Volmark came before the assembled captains and kings to claim the driftwood crown, grounding his right in the same Hoare blood his ancestors had already invoked.

The crown went to another, but Maron did not leave empty-handed: after the Battle of the Shield Islands, King Euron named him Lord of Greenshield.
