Ten Towers
Diez Torres
Ten Towers is the seat of House Harlaw and the youngest castle in the Iron Islands, and also the strangest: not a single fortress with towers, but ten lesser castles raised side by side beside the sea.
Under its roof stands the Harlaw throne of crossed scythes and a library holding much of the archipelago's written knowledge, and its walls have served both as shelter for the family's kin and, in time of war, as a prison for those who fall into its keeping.
Chapter 1
The Harlaws' new castle
Books only
The castle was raised by Lord Theomore Harlaw, ruler of the Iron Islands, after he lost three infant sons in their cradles. He blamed the flooded cellars and damp stones of Harlaw Hall, the family's old seat corroded by sea salt, and resolved that his heirs would never again sleep in that dampness.
What rose from his orders was not a single tower but ten small castles clustered together by the sea, with their own dock and a hall holding the Harlaw throne of crossed silver scythes. Among the ten stand the Widow's Tower, where an elder sister of a later lord of the house would eventually withdraw, and the Bookkeeper's Tower, octagonal and thick-walled, with a reading room on its fifth floor.
Chapter 2
Asha Greyjoy's captives
Books only
During the war, Asha Greyjoy brought Sybelle Locke and her children Gawen and Erena Glover to Ten Towers as prisoners, leaving them there under the watch of her aunts, the sisters of Lord Rodrik Harlaw.
When the time came to move again, Asha chose to leave the two children behind rather than put them through a second voyage by sea: the girl had already fallen ill on the first crossing to Ten Towers, and Asha would not risk her getting worse.
