Harlaw

Its hills hide veins of iron, lead and tin, and its pastures raise the shaggy ponies used across the whole of Ironman's Bay. A single day's sail separates it from Pyke.

Ten Towers, seat of House Harlaw, is the island's main stronghold, surrounded by lesser holdings such as Volmark, home to the house of the same name, and lands belonging to minor families like the Stonetrees.

Harlaw once had thick forests, until the ironborn themselves felled them to build their ships. With that timber, the island's traders reached Lannisport, Oldtown and the Free Cities, back when House Hoare still ruled the archipelago.

Archmaester Hake also came from Harlaw, though nothing else of his years there survived.

When Harren the Black and his whole house burned in the fall of Harrenhal, Qhorin Volmark, lord of Harlaw, claimed the crown of the Iron Islands for himself. Aegon I Targaryen refused him that and beat him in the field.

Generations later, during the Greyjoy Rebellion, forces loyal to King Robert Baratheon occupied the island.

Old Gran Gray brought word to Harlaw that the priest Aeron Greyjoy meant to call a kingsmoot.

Before it took place, Asha Greyjoy traveled to Ten Towers to see her uncle, Lord Rodrik Harlaw, who told her that Lord Baelor Blacktyde had stopped briefly on the island on his way to Old Wyk.

After the kingsmoot, where her uncle Euron Greyjoy was crowned king of the Isles and the North, Asha set out for Deepwood Motte, but first stopped at Ten Towers to say goodbye to her mother, Alannys Harlaw.

There she learned that Euron had married her off, without her consent, to Erik Ironmaker.
