Crackclaw Point

North of the point lies Crab Bay, and south of it Blackwater Bay, both opening onto the Narrow Sea; between them stretches the wildest country in the Crownlands — marsh, steep hills, pine woods and sandy flats.

When the Andals tried to take the point, the First Men bled them in the valleys and drowned them in the bogs; over time the two peoples mixed anyway, through marriage rather than conquest.

The kings of Duskendale, the lords of Maidenpool and later the proud Celtigars of Claw Isle all tried to impose their rule, but the point's people knew its woods and caves better than any outsider and simply vanished into the hills when pressed too hard. When they weren't fighting off would-be conquerors, they fought each other, their feuds as deep and dark as the swamps between the hills; now and then a champion — Lord Lucifer Hardy, the Brune brothers, Ser Clarence Crabb — forced a peace on the point that never outlived him.

During the War of Conquest, Aegon the Conqueror sent his sister Visenya to Crackclaw Point. Its lords, already aware of what had become of Harren the Black at Harrenhal, laid down their swords before her. Visenya took them into her service and told them they owed no loyalty to Maidenpool, Claw Isle or Duskendale. That didn't stop the Celtigars from sending men across to the eastern shore to collect taxes, and when they sent many, few came back to tell of it.

When Prince Rhaegar Targaryen fought at the Trident, many lords and champions of Crackclaw Point marched with him: several Crabbs, several Brunes, several Boggs. Others wore the white cloak of the Kingsguard instead: a Hardy, a Cave, a Pyne, and three Crabbs — Clement, Rupert and Clarence the Little — all swore that service.

Brienne of Tarth crossed Crackclaw Point looking for Sansa Stark, guided by a local man, Dick Crabb, and accompanied by her squire, Podrick Payne. She was making for a smugglers' cove near the Whispers, hoping to find the fool Dontos Hollard, who might know where Sansa was. Along the way they passed through Refugio de Malacosta, seat of House Brune, where they found no hospitality, and noticed a rider trailing them at a distance.

At the Whispers, the ruined castle, they found the mouth of a great cave in the cliffs, but the steps down to the cove had collapsed and nothing could be landed there. Inside the castle they were attacked by former Bloody Mummers — Shagwell, Pyg and Timeon — who killed Crabb before Brienne cut down all three. Burying their guide, they ran into the rider who had been following them, Ser Hyle Hunt, sent by Lord Randyll Tarly with orders to bring Sansa to Maidenpool if they found her.
