House Caron of Nightsong was one of the oldest lines of the Dornish Marches, a vassal of House Baratheon of Storm's End and, for generations, a guardian of the southern border of the Stormlands. They held the title Lord of the Marches and a sigil of black nightingales on gold, matched by a words as often quoted as their deeds in battle: No Song So Sweet.

The Carons rank among the oldest houses of the Dornish Marches, their origin traced by tradition to the Age of Heroes. Warriors and singers alike came from their line, and their sigil appeared in countless battles defending the border of the Stormlands. The title Lord of the Marches brought them renown, though never command over the region's other houses.

During the First Dornish War, Lord Fowler besieged Nightsong, put it to the torch, and carried off its lords as prisoners.

Beside Lord Dondarrion

Generations later, a Lord Caron joined Lord Dondarrion in his campaign against the Vulture King in the Red Mountains, the same campaign in which the hedge knight Arlan of Pennytree and his squire Dunk served.

The end of the house

Lord Bryce Caron fell in single combat to Ser Philip Foote during the Battle of the Blackwater, fighting on Stannis Baratheon's side. With no kin left but Mylenda Caron and the bastard Rolland Storm, King Joffrey I granted the lands, seat, titles and incomes to Ser Philip, and House Foote of Nightsong rose upon those remains.

The last nightingales
Books only
Despite their house's fall, loyal Carons followed Stannis Baratheon to the Wall; during the Battle of Castle Black, Jon Snow recognized a field of birds among his men's banners. Rolland Storm, Bryce's bastard half-brother, would go on claiming rights over Nightsong, though the seat already belonged to Ser Philip Foote.
