House Glover of Deepwood Motte

Long before they knelt to Winterfell, the lords of Deepwood Motte wore crowns of their own: they ruled as Kings of the First Men in the age after the Long Night, until the Starks, by then Kings of Winter, brought them low and made them bannermen.

That old loyalty held for centuries. When Queen Alysanne Targaryen rode north in the year 58 AC, a Glover named Benton served as First Ranger of the Night's Watch. Later, under Lord Cregan Stark, the Glovers joined the hunt for the wildlings that Sylas the Grim had led south of the Wall.

Deepwood Motte's ties reached as far as Bear Island: Jeor Mormont chose a woman born in the Glover castle as a wife for his son Jorah. The marriage lasted ten years, until she died after losing her third child before it was born.

When the young lord Brandon Stark rode to King's Landing to demand answers from Rhaegar Targaryen over his sister's disappearance, his squire Ethan Glover rode with him. Of the men who went with Brandon that day, Ethan was the only one who came out alive. He died some time later, at the Tower of Joy.

After finding hints that the Lannisters lay behind the attempt on Bran's life, Eddard Stark asked Catelyn to send word to Ser Helman Tallhart and Galbart Glover, telling them to raise a hundred bowmen and hold Moat Cailin.

Months later, when Robb gathered the northern lords at Winterfell, Bran picked out the Glover gauntlet among the banners, silver on scarlet. Robett, Galbart's brother, asked for command with a joke on his lips, and the two of them greeted Catelyn when she joined the army at Moat Cailin. When Robb split his forces at the Twins, Galbart stayed with the king while Robett was placed under Roose Bolton's command.

The Glover banner also flew at the Green Fork, where Tyrion Lannister picked it out among the northern host. After the victory, Catelyn saw Galbart praying beside Robb in the godswood at Riverrun.

In the dispute over the Hornwood lands, the Glovers backed Larence Snow, Lord Halys Hornwood's bastard son, and took him in to raise.

When Robett and Galbart rode south with Robb, Deepwood Motte was left in the care of Robett's wife, Sybelle Locke. But when the castle's steward arrived at Winterfell for the harvest feast, Bran realized it was the steward, not Lady Glover, who truly ran things in her absence.

During Robb's campaign in the westerlands, Galbart and Rickard Karstark carried the war along the Sunset Sea coast after the victory at Oxcross. Robett, meanwhile, was taken prisoner at Harrenhal, seemingly held by the Bloody Mummers, though northmen and sellswords were in fact plotting together to seize the castle. Later he was ordered to attack Dark Hollow, on word passed down by Roose Bolton in the name of a king who had given no such order.

When the ironborn invaded the north, Asha Greyjoy took Deepwood Motte and held Sybelle and her children hostage. Theon Greyjoy noted that no Glover rode with Ser Rodrik Cassel to drive out the invaders — their own castle, after all, was held by Theon's sister.

Robett survived the battle at Dark Hollow and led the survivors' retreat, only to run into Ser Gregor Clegane waiting on the Kingsroad. Robb eventually traded him for Martyn Lannister, and Robett was sent back by ship from Dark Hollow.

On the road to the Twins, for Edmure Tully's wedding to Roslin Frey, Galbart took over from Brynden Tully as commander of the scouts. Later, with an eye on retaking Moat Cailin from the ironborn, Robb sent Galbart and Maege Mormont to search for Howland Reed aboard Mallister longships, up through the marshes of the Neck.

Held captive at Deepwood Motte, Sybelle Locke was treated well by Asha Greyjoy, and told her that Galbart would negotiate a trade: the northmen would hand over Deepwood Motte, Torrhen's Square and Moat Cailin in exchange for the Stony Shore.

Asha took Lady Glover and her children toward Harlaw. On the journey Sybelle's milk dried up, and they had to feed the infant Erena on goat's milk; the girl arrived ill.

Far away, Brienne of Tarth recognized the Glover sigil among the dead gathered around Dark Hollow.

Stannis Baratheon took back Deepwood Motte, defeating Asha and her ironborn there. Lady Sybelle declared for him and sent the clansmen sworn to the castle to march with him on Winterfell, then held by Roose Bolton.

At White Harbor, Robett tried to raise men with little success. Together with Wyman Manderly, he asked Davos Seaworth to put his smuggler's skills to use and bring Rickon Stark home.
