House Selmy of Harvest Hall
Casa Selmy de Torreón Cosecha
House Selmy is a vassal family of the Baratheons of Storm's End, seated at Harvest Hall in the Stormlands.
Though the sources describe it as a mere knightly house, its fame rests on a single man: Ser Barristan Selmy, who rose to command the Kingsguard of the Seven Kingdoms.
Chapter 1
A knightly house with a lord's name
Books only
House Selmy is a vassal of the Baratheons of Storm's End, seated at Harvest Hall in the Stormlands. Its arms show three stalks of wheat on a tenné field, an agricultural image rare among the region's other sigils.
Semi-canonical sources describe it as a simple knightly house, headed by a landed knight rather than a titled lord. The appendix of A Dance with Dragons, however, calls its head a Lord, pointing to a rise in status that no text fully explains.
Chapter 2
From Robert's Kingsguard to dismissal
Books and show
Ser Barristan Selmy, the house's best-known member, serves as Lord Commander of the Kingsguard during Robert Baratheon's reign. When the king dies, his successor casts him out of the post despite his years of service.
Chapter 3
Under a false name, in service to Renly and then Daenerys
Books only
When the War of the Five Kings breaks out, the house sides with Renly Baratheon. Barristan, already stripped of his white cloak, poses as an old man named Arstan Whitebeard and presents himself as squire to Strong Belwas.
Under that guise he saves Daenerys Targaryen's life and earns a place in her retinue, without revealing who he really is.
Chapter 4
The squire who was the Lord Commander
Books only
Arstan Whitebeard foils an assassination attempt on Daenerys by Mero and, after the attack, confesses his true identity. The queen pardons him for the deception and names him Lord Commander of her Queensguard.
Chapter 5
Hand of the Queen before Yunkai
Books only
Raised to Hand of the Queen, Barristan sets about organizing the defense as the confrontation with Yunkai looms.
