During the events told in A Dance with Dragons, Hoster is sent as a hostage to Ser Jaime Lannister. The purpose is to guarantee his father's good behavior and to keep House Blackwood's alliance with the Iron Throne.
Those who describe him at that point call him a boy fond of books, tall and gawky, clumsy in his movements. He stands nearly seven feet tall, all legs, ankles, and elbows.
