Battle of the Burning Mill

The Battle of the Burning Mill was one of the first open clashes of the Dance of the Dragons, at a point when the war between Targaryens was already dragging the great houses of the Riverlands into killing each other.
In the village that gave the battle its name, the Blackwoods and the Brackens — rivals long before anyone spoke of black or green dragons — fought each other with Daemon Targaryen already settled at Harrenhal, and the outcome pushed the greens' court into a decision that would carry the war further afield.

Amos BrackenAfter seizing Harrenhal, Daemon Targaryen used the castle as a base to strike at the greens across the Riverlands, and there he found a ready ally: the Blackwoods, at odds with the Brackens for generations.
The fighting reached the village of the Burning Mill. There Samwell Blackwood and Amos Bracken met in single combat; Bracken killed him, but was himself struck down soon after by a weirwood arrow said to have been loosed by Alysanne, Samwell's sister. The mill burned while the fighting went on around it.
With Bracken dead, Raylon Rivers led the survivors in retreat toward Stone Hedge, a castle that would not stay out of the Rogue Prince's hands for long either.

Criston ColeThe defeat at the Burning Mill, together with the loss of Stone Hedge, convinced the greens' Privy Council that staying on the defensive was no longer enough.
King Aegon II sent Ser Criston Cole to Duskendale with orders to sack the city, opening yet another front in the war.
