Battle of the Camps

batalla de los Campamentos

The Battle of the Camps was the strike that broke the Lannister siege of Riverrun, split into three camps along the Tumblestone.

Brynden Tully opened it before dawn and Robb Stark himself closed it with Grey Wind at the front; the result tore an entire army apart and opened the riverlands to the Stark cause.

Chapter 1

Three camps, one river

299 ACBooks only

In this chapterBrynden Tully

The Lannister host had split into three separate camps to keep pressure on Riverrun from every side. Before the Battle of the Whispering Wood turned the war around, Ser Brynden Tully struck the northern camp, on the banks of the Tumblestone. He tore down the palisades in the dark and cut down the sentries before they could raise the alarm; leaderless and half asleep, the camp fell with barely a fight.

Lord Andros Brax tried to save the western camp by loading his men onto rafts to cross the river. Stones rained down from Riverrun's walls and sank the rafts one after another; the few men who reached the far bank found Stark soldiers waiting. Brax's own raft went down too, and the weight of his armor dragged him under in the current.

Chapter 2

The camp in between

299 ACBooks only

In this chapterRobb Stark

The middle camp, caught between the two branches of the river, took the brunt of Robb Stark's own attack, Grey Wind leading two columns of armored riders with Lord Umber and men of House Mallister at his side. The Lannister men tried to form a shield wall, but a party out of Riverrun under Lord Tytos Blackwood hit them from behind.

Umber put the siege towers to the torch. Blackwood freed the prisoners the Lannisters had taken after the Battle of Riverrun.

Chapter 3

An army that stops existing

299 ACBooks only

Only the eastern camp pulled back in good order, two thousand spearmen and as many archers marched to Golden Tooth under Ser Forley Prester. A Tyroshi sellsword commanding the Lannister free riders killed his own captains partway through the retreat and switched sides.

The army besieging Riverrun stopped existing as a single force, and the river lords could join their swords to Robb's, cutting Lord Tywin off from the west and his supply lines. Tywin found himself boxed in: Robb and the river lords to the west, Roose Bolton to the north, the mountains of the Vale to the east, and soon Renly Baratheon's troops closing from the south.
