Edwyn Frey

Edwyn is married to Janyce Hunter, and the couple has a daughter, Walda. An uncomfortable rumor circulates around the Twins: that Janyce has shared a bed with Black Walder, Edwyn's half-brother, and that the girl is actually his.

That same Black Walder is, in Edwyn's eyes, the greatest danger to his place as heir. The two brothers barely speak, and Edwyn makes no secret of seeing him as a direct threat within a family with far too many branches and far too many claimants.

He is described as a pale, thin man with a hooked nose and straight black hair. His great-uncle Merrett goes so far as to say that he and his brother are worse than their own father, and those who deal with him describe a cold temper bordering on hatred. With a sword, he is no great hand.

Edwyn is at the Twins when Catelyn Tully arrives to parley with his great-grandfather, Lord Walder Frey, seeking passage north for her son's troops. He is given no active role in the talks — he is simply present.

When Robb Stark and his bannermen arrive at the Twins for the wedding of Edmure Tully and Roslin Frey, Edwyn is among those sent out to welcome them. During the feast, Dacey Mormont asks him to dance, and he turns her down rudely.

Catelyn Tully notices he is wearing armor hidden under his festive clothes and tries to grab hold of him to find out why; Edwyn wrenches free and offers no explanation.

Edwyn attends Ser Jaime Lannister's war council on behalf of his house, since his father claims to be indisposed. There he bears the brunt of the river lords' anger at the Freys, while Jaime takes every chance to mock him.

Soon after, outlaws kill Ser Ryman Frey, and Edwyn becomes the direct heir to the Twins. The death doesn't sit right with him: he suspects his brother Black Walder may be behind it, and from then on he starts to fear for his own life.
