Hoarfrost Umber
Hoarfrost Umber was Lord of Last Hearth and head of House Umber during the reign of Aegon V Targaryen, generations before the lordship passed to his descendant Great Jon Umber.
He is remembered above all for a domestic decision: sending one of his sons to train at the Citadel, from where that son returned with a nickname the family still repeats in whispers.
Chapter 1
A lord of Last Hearth
Books only
Hoarfrost Umber ruled Last Hearth as Lord of House Umber during the reign of Aegon V Targaryen. He had three sons: the eldest inherited the lordship, while the two younger were Mors and Hother.
The eldest son himself had several children of his own. The first of them, Great Jon Umber, would go on to lead the house in his turn.
Chapter 2
Whoresbane of the Citadel
250 ACBooks only
Lord Hoarfrost believed his youngest son, Hother, had the makings of a maester, so around 250 AC he sent him to train at the Citadel in Oldtown.
There a prostitute tried to rob him, and Hother gutted her, an episode that earned him the nickname Whoresbane.
The story is told in whispers over a detail rarely spoken aloud: the prostitute was in fact a man.
