House Umber of the Last Hearth

When Robert's Rebellion broke out, the Umbers marched with Lord Eddard Stark. The war cost them dearly: both of Mors Umber's sons fell at the Battle of the Trident, with nothing more recorded about how they died.

After Lord Eddard's arrest in King's Landing, the Umbers answered Robb Stark's call. The Greatjon led his men south, though it began roughly — he clashed with Robb before turning into one of his fiercest supporters on the field. He left Last Hearth in the hands of his uncles Mors and Hother, joint castellans while he went to war.

The Greatjon's eldest son, Smalljon Umber, joined Robb's personal guard. When word of Eddard's death reached the North, the Umbers didn't hesitate: they backed Robb as Winterfell's heir, and it was the Greatjon who named him King in the North.

Mors and Hother traveled to Winterfell for a harvest feast. There Hother asked for ships to fight the wildlings along the Bay of Seals, and was told he'd have to work it out with Lord Wyman Manderly if he wanted a fleet. Mors, meanwhile, offered himself as a husband for Lady Hornwood; the answer was no.

When Theon Greyjoy seized Winterfell, the two uncles gathered men to try to take the castle back from him. Meanwhile the Umbers who had marched south stayed at King Robb's side through his campaign into the westerlands.

At the Red Wedding, the Greatjon was taken prisoner and held at the Twins. His son and heir, Smalljon, was killed by Bolton men. With both out of the picture, it was left unclear who would inherit Last Hearth.

With the Greatjon a prisoner, Queen Cersei assumed the Umbers had fallen in line behind House Bolton, the new Warden of the North by Lannister grant. The truth was messier: Hother led half the surviving Umber men under Roose Bolton's banner, though Bolton still didn't trust them.

The other half followed Mors, who had thrown in with King Stannis Baratheon as he tried to clear the North of Bolton and Greyjoy men. Mors made one thing plain: whatever happened, Umbers would not fight Umbers.
