Ned Umber

Ned Umber is Lord of Last Hearth, the seat of House Umber at the northernmost edge of the North. He inherits the title while still a boy, after his father's death, and his loyalty sides with House Stark at a moment when the Umber name still carries the weight of a different allegiance.

This is a story told only by the television series: in the novels, Last Hearth remains in the hands of his father, Lord Jon Umber.

Chapter 1

The boy lord of Last Hearth

Show only

Ned Umber is the son of Smalljon Umber and the grandson of Greatjon Umber, and his name is likely a tribute to Eddard Stark. When his father dies fighting alongside House Bolton at the Battle of the Bastards, Ned becomes the new lord of House Umber despite being only ten years old.

Chapter 2

The oath at Winterfell

Show only

At a council of northern and Vale lords gathered in the great hall of Winterfell, presided over by the new King in the North, Sansa Stark suggests giving Last Hearth to another lord loyal to Jon. He refuses, arguing that Ned bears no responsibility for his father's choices, and calls Ned and Alys Karstark forward. Fearing execution, both obey; but Jon only asks them to renew their oath to House Stark. Relieved, they draw their swords, kneel and declare they will serve now and always, keeping their place as heads of their respective houses.

Ned is also present when Jon announces his journey to Dragonstone to seek an alliance with Daenerys Targaryen against the Night King, leaving Sansa in command of the North.

Chapter 3

The return to Last Hearth

Show only

In this chapterDaenerys Targaryen

Ned stands among the northern lords when Jon arrives at Winterfell with Daenerys Targaryen and her army, watching the queen with a mix of curiosity and fear. Soon after, in the great hall, the lords discuss the fall of the Wall at Eastwatch. Since Last Hearth is the castle closest to that breach, Sansa Stark asks Ned to return to his keep and gather his men. He asks for more horses and carts to speed up moving his people, addressing Jon and Daenerys awkwardly, and leaves the hall as soon as his request is granted.

Chapter 4

The spiral in the great hall

305 ACShow only

At Last Hearth, a group of wildlings, sworn brothers of the Night's Watch and men of the Brotherhood without Banners led by Tormund, Eddison Tollett and Beric Dondarrion find Ned impaled on a wall of the great hall, at the center of a spiral of severed limbs, a knife still in his hand. Beric reads the spiral as a message from the Night King.

Ned, reanimated as a wight, wakes at the sound of the three men talking. He lets out a scream that startles them and attacks Tormund with his own knife. Beric immediately burns him with his flaming sword, and the fire consumes both the wight and the spiral carved into the floor.
