Hother Umber

Hother Umber, known as Hother Whoresbane, is one of two brothers left holding Last Hearth when most of the house's fighting men march off to war. Son of Hoarfrost Umber and uncle to Greatjon, he is a widower with a sharp tongue and a reputation as hard as his name.

Chapter 1

How the name was earned

Books only

Hoarfrost Umber thought this younger son had more of a maester in him than a warrior, and sent him to train at the Citadel in Oldtown around 250 AC. There he killed a would-be thief with such violence that the name never left him; the story is whispered rather than told, because the victim wasn't the woman she seemed to be. He was widowed at some unrecorded point.

Chapter 2

Joint castellan of Last Hearth

Books only

In this chapterJon UmberRobb Stark

When Greatjon gathers his men to answer Robb Stark's call to arms, Last Hearth is left without its lord. The house splits command between two of his uncles, and Hother takes up joint rule of the castle alongside his brother with the title of castellan.

Chapter 3

The harvest feast

Books only

At the harvest feast held at Winterfell, Hother asks for ships to stop wildling raids along the Bay of Seals, and is put in charge of raising that fleet alongside Lord Wyman Manderly. Along the way he complains: with so many Last Hearth men serving in Robb's war, there aren't enough hands left to swing a scythe, and the harvest has been cut in half. During the performance of The Night That Ended, he blows a silver war horn.

Later, when Greatjon tells Robb that his uncles would like to remarry, the King in the North weighs pairing Whoresbane with one of Lord Walder Frey's daughters.

Chapter 4

A forced allegiance

Books only

With Greatjon held by the Freys at the Twins, Hother agrees, without any enthusiasm, to bend the knee to House Bolton. Mors offers his sword to Stannis on condition that Hother be pardoned, and makes clear no Umber will fight another; Roose Bolton, in any case, doesn't trust the oath.

At the feast held at the Dreadfort, before the march on Moat Cailin, he sits beside Arnolf Karstark, close to Ramsay. When a disfigured man called Reek is brought before them, he recognizes him at once and asks that his throat be cut before he betrays them the way he betrayed Robb Stark. He then marches south with three hundred spearmen and a hundred bowmen.

Chapter 5

The wedding at Winterfell

Books only

In this chapterArya Stark

At Winterfell, Hother attends the wedding of Ramsay Bolton to the girl everyone calls Arya Stark. The next morning he is caught murmuring with a man from the garrison, and when the storms that follow the ceremony roll in, he stays inside the castle rather than leave.

According to Lady Barbrey Dustin, Hother would relish killing the Freys who were also at the wedding, but won't do it while Greatjon remains a prisoner at the Twins.
