Arrax
Arrax was the dragon ridden by Prince Lucerys Velaryon, one of Rhaenyra Targaryen's sons. He hatched from an egg placed by his rider's cradle, following Targaryen custom, and over time became his companion through the opening moves of the civil war known as the Dance of the Dragons.
He was still a young dragon, growing larger each year without ever matching the oldest beasts of Westeros.
Chapter 1
An egg for the cradle
116 ACBooks only
When Rhaenyra Targaryen's children were born, a royal decree ordered that each be given a dragon's egg for their cradle. Some at court whispered doubts that the eggs would ever hatch, since they also doubted who the children's true father really was. Lucerys's egg hatched like the rest, and the hatchling was named Arrax.
According to sources close to the chronicles, Arrax was pearl white, with a golden crest and eyes, and breathed yellow flames. He grew larger with each passing year, though he never came to rival the realm's oldest dragons.
Chapter 2
The chase over Shipbreaker Bay
129 ACBooks and show
When war broke out between Rhaenyra's supporters and those of her half-brother, Lucerys flew Arrax to Storm's End to win Lord Borros Baratheon's backing. There he found his uncle Aemond, sent on the very same errand. It was Aemond's offer that swayed Lord Borros, though the lord of Storm's End refused his rival's request to have his nephew killed.
On the flight back to Dragonstone, Aemond and his dragon Vhagar gave chase. Vhagar was five times Arrax's size, and caught him over Shipbreaker Bay. Three days later, Arrax's head and neck washed up in the bay, already picked over by crabs and gulls.
