Cannibal

Long before anyone could say for certain where he had come from, Cannibal already held the eastern slope of Dragonmont, on the far side of the mountain, away from the Targaryen nests. Some smallfolk swore he had lived on the island since before the royal house ever arrived, though Septon Barth and Grand Maester Munkun always doubted that tale.

By size and by age he was reckoned older than the island's other two loose dragons, Sheepstealer and Grey Ghost, which suggested he had hatched well before the Old King's reign. He was coal black with green eyes, and his name came from a very specific habit: he fed on dead dragons, newly hatched young, and whole eggs. His cave was littered with the bones of those who had tried and failed to tame him.

Even before the Dance of the Dragons broke out, several attempts had already been made to mount him, and all had ended the same way, with one more name added to the bones piled in his lair. When the civil war left dragons without riders, Jacaerys Velaryon sought men willing to try their luck with any of Dragonstone's three wild dragons.

Among those who came forward was Denys Argenta, who claimed descent from Maegor I Targaryen himself, and who went to try Sheepstealer instead. Cannibal would not let him near: he drove off the other dragon and devoured Denys along with the children who had come with him. After that, no one else dared try.

In 130 AC word spread that Cannibal had killed Grey Ghost, though the one actually responsible had been Sunfyre. Local fishermen grew afraid the dragon might turn on them next, and asked Ser Robert Quince to send knights to finish him off.

Quince refused, reasoning that if left alone the dragon would cause no trouble, and instead banned fishing in the waters east of Dragonmont, where Grey Ghost's body had washed up. Lady Baela Targaryen was not satisfied with that answer and wanted to find out the truth herself, confident that Moondancer could outfly Cannibal and that, unlike others, she was not afraid of him. Quince forbade her to take the risk and kept her confined to her chambers.

It was said that in 132 AC Cannibal flew over Lord Corlys Velaryon's sea burning, as though paying his respects. Archmaester Gyldayn was skeptical of that reading, suspecting that, had he truly meant to intervene, he would sooner have come down to eat the corpse than to honor it.

After the war, Cannibal kept to the slopes of Dragonmont for a time, until one day he was simply no longer seen. No one ever explained what became of him or when he left the island.
