Seasmoke

Laenor bonded with Seasmoke in 101 AC, long before he ever managed to ride it. The chronicle calls it his pride, the creature on which he had staked all his hopes as heir to High Tide.

That bond broke when Laenor died in 120 AC. Riderless, the dragon stopped dealing with men and took to flying on its own, until it nested among the rocks of Dragonstone, where it would stay for nearly a decade. Its scales were pale silver-grey, and it stood twice the size of Tessarion, though barely two thirds the size of Vermithor.

As soon as the Dance of the Dragons broke out, Prince Jacaerys Velaryon combed Dragonstone looking for riders for the dragons left masterless. Seasmoke did not tame easily: in one attempt it killed the Lord Commander of the Kingsguard, Ser Steffon Darklyn.

The one who finally tamed it was Addam of Hull, a fifteen-year-old boy who claimed to be Laenor's bastard son. The feat led Lord Corlys Velaryon to ask Queen Rhaenyra to legitimize the boy and name him his heir.

Seasmoke itself later helped drive off Sheepstealer after that dragon rejected Alyn, Addam's brother, as its rider.

Addam and Seasmoke fought together for the first time at the battle of the Gullet, alongside the other newly tamed dragons. Afterward, the beast flew over King's Landing right after the city fell to the Blacks, as a warning to anyone still thinking of resisting.

With most of the riders headed to other fronts, Addam was left to guard the capital. But Rhaenyra grew suspicious of the newly arrived dragonriders after the betrayals suffered at Tumbleton and ordered him arrested. Corlys Velaryon warned the boy in time, and he escaped the Dragonpit on Seasmoke's back.

Legend says Addam flew all the way to the Isle of Faces; the chronicle tells a different story. In truth he rode through the Riverlands gathering men, and at Riverrun he convinced Ser Elmo Tully to summon his bannermen. With four thousand soldiers he marched against those holding Tumbleton.

Seasmoke came down over the town wrapped in flame. It set fire to the Hightower and Prince Daeron Targaryen's pavilions, and Daeron died in the chaos that followed.

Then Tessarion rose spitting fire and Seasmoke flew to meet it; neither dragon could get the better of the other. Riderless Vermithor had begun attacking the river soldiers, and Seasmoke came down on him too. All three ended up fighting in the mud, amid blood and smoke, until Vermithor closed its jaws on Seasmoke's neck and tore its head off.

After the war, Lady Sharis Footly had the heads of Seasmoke and Vermithor cleaned and put on display in the square of Tumbleton. She charged a fee to anyone who wanted to see or touch them.
