Grey Ghost was one of three wild dragons nesting at Dragonstone during the Dance of the Dragons, the civil war that split the Targaryens apart. No rider ever claimed him: he kept to the heights of Dragonmont, and his pale colouring let him vanish into the island's morning mist.

When the Dance of the Dragons broke out, Prince Jacaerys Velaryon pushed several men to attempt taming him, Alyn of Hull among them. None of them managed even to find him.
Dragonstone's people named him for his colouring, a pale grey like morning mist, which hid him as he flew over the narrow sea hunting fish. He preferred fish to other prey, snatching his meals from the water without ever landing.

Mistaken for Cannibal

Aegon II TargaryenIn 130 AC, fishermen from Dragonstone found his remains, burned and half-eaten. The crew of the Nessaria reported seeing two dragons locked in a fight overhead, and castellan Ser Robert Quince assumed the killer was Cannibal, the island's other wild dragon.
The true killer was Sunfyre, who had flown back to Dragonstone with his rider, King Aegon II Targaryen, and who came away from the encounter with fresh wounds of his own.
