Caraxes

In the year 72 AC, Prince Aemon Targaryen was knighted and soon after became the rider of Caraxes, held to be the fiercest of the young dragons raised at Dragonpit. He often took to the sky alongside his siblings, Alyssa on Meleys and Baelon on Vhagar.

During the Fourth Dornish War, the three dragons — Caraxes, Vhagar and Vermithor — set fire to the ships with which Morion Martell tried to cross the Sea of Dorne.

In 92 AC, during what came to be called the Myrish Massacre, Caraxes carried Aemon to Tarth. While the dragon busied himself eating goats on the island, the prince was struck by a crossbow bolt through the throat.

With his death, Caraxes went without a rider, until Prince Daemon Targaryen claimed him some time later.

Prince Daemon Targaryen became Caraxes's second rider and fought at his side in a conflict at the Stepstones.

In the year 111 AC, Daemon arrived riding Caraxes at the tourney held in King's Landing.

Between 111 and 113 AC, Daemon and Rhaenyra, uncle and niece, raced each other daily on Caraxes and Syrax, flying from King's Landing to Dragonstone and back.

Shortly after Daemon married Laena Velaryon, the couple flew Caraxes and Vhagar to the Free Cities, steering clear of those under the Triarchy; crowds gathered in every port they visited to see the two dragons.

When the civil war known as the Dance of the Dragons broke out, Daemon and Caraxes took the castle of Harrenhal; the sheer terror the dragon inspired was enough to make its defenders surrender.

Later, Daemon flew Caraxes over King's Landing as the city fell into the hands of Rhaenyra's supporters, and panic spread among its people. Once resistance was crushed, Caraxes came to rest in the yards of the Red Keep.

Daemon and Caraxes traveled to the Trident together with Nettles and Sheepstealer, hunting Prince Aemond Targaryen and his mount Vhagar, who were harrying the river lords loyal to Rhaenyra's cause. Each dawn both riders took off with their dragons from Maidenpool, which served as their base, to track down their enemies.

The day the queen branded Nettles a traitor and she fled the city, Caraxes let out a roar so powerful it shattered the castle's windows: it was his farewell to Sheepstealer.

Thirteen days after reaching Harrenhal, the duel Daemon had been waiting for finally came: Caraxes threw himself at Vhagar and his rider, Prince Aemond. The two dragons kept fighting even as they fell from the sky, until both plunged together into the waters of the Gods Eye.

Vhagar and both riders died in the crash. Badly wounded, Caraxes managed to drag himself out of the water; one wing was torn and his entrails spilled from terrible injuries.

Caraxes did not last much longer: he died before the walls of Harrenhal on the twenty-second day of the fifth moon of 130 AC.
