Moondancer

Baela had been given a dragon's egg, and from it hatched Moondancer. When the fighting of the Dance of the Dragons broke out, the hatchling was still too small to bear a rider, though she kept growing.

Not until early 130 AC could Baela finally climb onto her back. Together they flew the length of Dragonstone and on as far as Driftmark.

When the carcass of the wild dragon Grey Ghost turned up on the far side of the mountain, it was thought the Cannibal, another riderless dragon prowling the island, had killed him. Baela wanted to fly out and hunt it down with Moondancer, sure that her dragon's agility would count for more than her rival's size.

Dragonstone's castellan, Ser Robert Quince, would not risk it and kept her shut away in her chambers.

When Dragonstone fell to Aegon II, his men went to seize Baela. She broke free of her chambers and reached the pit where the castle's dragons were kept, slipped Moondancer's chains, and saddled her.

Aegon II flew in on Sunfyre to reach the stronghold, and the two dragons tore into each other above it. Moondancer, smaller and quicker, dodged the half-crippled gold dragon's fire, jaws and claws for a time, tearing deep wounds into his back and his twisted wing.

A blast of flame caught her full in the eyes and left her blind, yet she drove at him anyway, and the two went down together. On the ground her speed counted for nothing against Sunfyre's bulk, and he killed her and fed on her body.

The wounds she had dealt him proved fatal all the same — Sunfyre died weeks later, in the last month of that year.
