Sunfyre

Sunfyre's egg hatched at Dragonstone; no record survives of the year. Around 120 AC Prince Aegon claimed him as a mount, and by then he was already older than Tessarion.

In 129 AC he was still described as a young dragon, splendid but without the bulk he'd carry later. His golden scales and the pale pink membranes of his wings caught the sun like solid gold, and his flame burned the same color.

When the Dance of the Dragons broke out, Aegon II flew Sunfyre against his niece Rhaenys and her dragon Meleys at Rook's Rest. The clash left Meleys dead and Sunfyre's wing nearly torn from his body; Aegon himself came out of it burned and gravely hurt, and had to be carried to King's Landing to recover.

Sunfyre, too heavy and too broken-winged to fly, stayed near the battlefield. Ser Criston Cole posted men around him to keep him safe: at first the dragon fed on the burned corpses of soldiers killed in the fighting, and then the guards themselves began bringing him calves and sheep.

When Walys Mooton retook Rook's Rest for the Blacks, he led his best men against the beast hoping to kill it. Sunfyre answered with his tail and gouts of flame, killing sixty attackers, Walys among them. Fifteen days later he was gone: his wing had healed crooked, but it was enough to fly again.

Sunfyre hid in the woods and caves of Claw Isle before finally returning to Dragonstone, the place he'd hatched. Sailors off the Nessaria spotted him fighting another dragon near Dragonmont, and the half-eaten corpse of a wild dragon, Grey Ghost, turned up near the mountain's base.

Aegon II, in disguise and accompanied by Ser Marston Waters, found him in a hidden lair and flew him in the days that followed to build his strength back up, while his supporters looked for a way to retake the island. Ser Alfred Broome helped deliver Dragonstone to the Greens, though Lady Baela Targaryen slipped the capture and reached her own dragon, Moondancer.

When Aegon II brought a still-wounded Sunfyre down into the newly taken castle, Moondancer rose to meet him. She was younger and smaller but faster, and she managed to rake his side and tear at his crooked wing before a blast of golden flame blinded her. Both dragons went down in the crash; Aegon broke both legs leaping clear, Baela was taken prisoner, and Sunfyre was left standing over his rival.

The victory left him worse off than before: fresh scars along his back, his neck torn open, his belly raw, and his right eye gone. He could no longer fly, so he stayed in the yard where he'd fallen, feeding first on Moondancer's corpse and then on the sheep brought to him. When Aegon II had Grand Maester Gerardys strangled and gutted, the maester's remains went to the dragon too.

On the twenty-second day of the tenth moon of 130 AC, the Nessaria brought Rhaenyra Targaryen to Dragonstone, where Ser Alfred Broome and the Greens took her prisoner. Seeing Sunfyre in his wounded state, Rhaenyra laughed.

Aegon II decided to feed her to his dragon. It's said Sunfyre only stirred when he caught the scent of blood from the dagger Alfred had planted in her chest: he bathed her in flame, then closed his jaws around her arm and shoulder, swallowing her in six bites and leaving only her left leg below the knee. Her son, Prince Aegon the Younger, was made to watch.

Aegon II hoped his dragon might heal enough to fly once more, but Sunfyre grew weaker and finally refused to eat. He died of his wounds on the ninth day of the twelfth moon of 130 AC, at Dragonstone.

Aegon II went back to King's Landing to rule over a realm that barely held together. He searched Dragonstone for dragon eggs, hoping to raise, in his own words, "a new Sunfyre, prouder and fiercer than the last," but none ever hatched. Not long after, someone poisoned him, and his short reign ended with him.
