Viserion

Mirri Maz Duur had said that only death pays for life. Daenerys burns Drogo's body on a pyre, binds Mirri Maz Duur to it herself, and lays among the flames the three stone eggs given to her as a wedding gift. Then she walks into the fire.

By dawn nothing is left but ash, an unhurt Daenerys, and three newly hatched dragons clinging to her body and between her legs. Viserion is named for the brother Daenerys never quite loved, Viserys Targaryen.

When Daenerys gathers her people to cross the Red Waste, she wears a dead lion's skin and carries Viserion on her shoulder. The dragon digs his black claws into the mane and coils his tail around her arm while she gives the order to follow the red comet.

In Qarth, the three brothers become the wonder of the city, a sight no one there has seen before. With Viserion still on her shoulder, Daenerys receives word that Robert Baratheon is dead; the small beast beats his cream wings and stirs the air around them.

In Slaver's Bay, after buying the Unsullied and turning them against their former masters, Daenerys lets Irri loose Viserion upon the slavers.

Around that time the dragon grows fond of Ben Plumm, a sellsword who claims Targaryen blood, and sometimes settles on his shoulder the way he once did on Daenerys's.

The first word of the dragons crosses the narrow sea and reaches Westeros, but in Meereen the trouble runs deeper: the three brothers begin growing wild and behaving badly. Viserion sets fire to Reznak mo Reznak's tokar, and it comes out that he and Drogon have been fighting each other.

One evening when Daenerys steps onto the terrace of the Great Pyramid, unsettled by the Sons of the Harpy, Viserion seems to sense it. She finds him coiled around a pear tree, head resting on his tail, and watches him take wing and circle wider and wider until he vanishes beyond the murky waters of the Skahazadhan.

When word spreads that Drogon has killed a child outside Meereen, Daenerys has Viserion and Rhaegal locked in a vault beneath the city. She leads Viserion down into the pit herself and leaves him inside with four oxen; the dragon ends up chained after eating his fill and falling asleep.

Later, Ser Barristan Selmy walks her back to the pit to see the dragons. Daenerys remembers how not long ago she carried him on her shoulder and fed him charred meat from her own hand; talking afterward with Daario Naharis, she thinks he and Rhaegal grow wilder with each day that passes.

When Daenerys brings Prince Quentyn Martell to see her dragons, she finds that Viserion has snapped one chain and melted the others. He clings to the roof like an enormous white bat, claws driven into the baked bricks crumbling under his weight.

After Daenerys vanishes on Drogon's back, Quentyn tries to steal one of the dragons with help from the Windblown. They find Viserion carving out a den in the thick wall of the roof, large enough to sleep in. He is the first to appear, drawn by Meris the Beauty in the belief she might be his mother; finding she is not, he grows agitated.

A crossbowman among the Brazen Beasts fires at him to no effect, and the dragon kills the man. Quentyn, remembering how Daenerys mastered Drogon with a whip on the sands of Meereen, tries the same with Viserion, not knowing Rhaegal stands behind him. The green dragon's fire catches Quentyn and burns him where he stands.

The iron doors melt and the dragons escape. Viserion digs his own den in the Pyramid of Uhlez, far now from chains and pits.

Some time later, Ser Barristan Selmy makes out pale wings moving over the distant hills, beyond the walls of Meereen.
