House Manwoody of Kingsgrave is a noble Dornish family, sworn to House Martell. Its name and its sigil — a white skull crowned in gold on a black field — recall a very old episode: the founder of the house killed a king of the Reach on the lands that now bear that name.
Ever since, the Manwoodys have held a constant presence on the Dornish frontier, locked for generations in conflict with the Marcher lords who watch that border from the north.

The dead king at Kingsgrave

The origin of the Manwoodys hinges on a single act: at some point in the distant past, the house's founder killed a king of the Reach on the very spot where the family's castle now stands. That is where the stronghold's name comes from, and also the crowned skull the house bears on its arms.
Nothing more is told of that episode beyond the fact that it was carved into stone and heraldry alike — a seat and a sigil built so that no one would forget a king had died there.
