House Toland of Ghost Hill
Casa Toland de Colina Fantasma
House Toland of Ghost Hill is a noble family of Dorne, sworn to House Martell and seated at the castle that gives it its name. Its arms — a dragon biting its own tail on a field of gold — come from an episode of Aegon the Conqueror's invasion that the house never forgot.
The house is currently led by Nymella Toland, with Valena Toland as her heir.
Chapter 1
Nymeria's allies
Books only
Long before Aegon set foot in Dorne, House Toland had already picked a side in the region's internal wars: they stood with Nymeria and House Martell against King Yorick V Yronwood.
Chapter 2
Dorne does not bend
Books only
When the War of Conquest reached Dorne, the Tolands joined the rest of the Dornish lords in resisting the Targaryens. The armies that had bent the rest of Westeros could not do the same to Dorne.
Chapter 3
The fool who died for his lord
Books only
During the First Dornish War, King Aegon I Targaryen reached Ghost Hill. Lord Toland did not come out to face him: he sent his champion to defend the castle while he and his family fled.
Aegon killed the champion with Blackfyre, and only afterward learned who the man really was — Lord Toland's fool, dressed in green and gold. The trick, and the lord's flight, were carved into the house's arms.
The Tolands then replaced their old sigil, a ghost, with a dragon biting its own tail: a jab at the time Aegon wasted at Ghost Hill, and a memory of the fool's motley green-and-gold clothes.
