Battle Above the Gods Eye

Daemon Targaryen had spent days hunting Aemond through the Riverlands before he finally issued his challenge. He set up camp with Caraxes among the ruins of Harrenhal and waited there for thirteen days.

Aemond returned at last on Vhagar's back, with his lover Alys Rivers at his side, pregnant with his child. The two men exchanged only a few words before mounting. Aemond kissed Alys fiercely and said his goodbyes.

The sun was setting when the two dragons climbed above the lake. Their roars carried for leagues, and the flames they breathed burned so bright that smallfolk far off thought the sky itself was on fire.

Caraxes drove at Vhagar and clamped his jaws around her neck; the two of them tumbled downward without breaking the hold. As Caraxes tightened his grip on her throat, Vhagar's teeth tore at his wings and her claws raked open his belly.

Daemon is said to have leapt from his saddle onto Vhagar's back and driven Dark Sister into his nephew's empty eye socket just as both dragons struck the water. The spray thrown up by the impact rose as high as the Kingspyre Tower. Neither combatant could have lived through a fall like that.

The loss struck Greens and Blacks alike: each side was left without a great commander and without a mighty dragon.

Vhagar's carcass was found years later, Aemond's body still chained to the saddle, Dark Sister still lodged in his empty socket. Her skull was carried to King's Landing to be displayed in the throne room; the sword returned to House Targaryen.

Caraxes managed to crawl out of the lake to the shore, where he died near Harrenhal. Daemon's body was never found. Some tales claim he survived and later went looking for Nettles, his other lover, but most historians dismiss this, believing the current carried him off, or that the fish took him.
