Red Fork

The Red Fork runs a long way before it reaches Riverrun, and arrives already darkened: the silt and mud it carries down from the western mountains give it the murky color that names it.

Ser Brynden Tully holds that this same color is the source of the red in his house's arms, though the material does not say whether the rest of House Tully shares that belief.

Before the river had a name in the chronicles of the Seven Kingdoms, Axel Tully raised Riverrun where the Red Fork meets the Tumblestone, on land granted to him by Armistead Vance.

During the War of Conquest, the King in the North Torrhen Stark surrendered to Aegon the Conqueror on the banks of the Red Fork. It is said that the Posada del Hombre Arrodillado stands where Aegon accepted that surrender, though the material presents this as a tale, not a confirmed fact.

During the Dance of the Dragons, Lord Jason Lannister died at the hands of Pate of Longleaf in the battle of the Red Fork.

In those same years, Prince Aemond Targaryen and his dragon Vhagar attacked the village of Danza de Sally, on the river's banks.

Ser Gregor Clegane attacked Wendish, Sherrer, and the Vado del Titiritero, then withdrew across the Red Fork into the Tierras del Oeste before Ser Raymun Darry could cut him off.

Lord Eddard Stark, then Hand of the King, sent Lord Beric Dondarrion to capture Gregor and bring him before the king's justice; after crossing the river, Beric's men were ambushed by Gregor at that same ford. Marq Piper answered by ravaging lands along the Red Fork, already on the western bank.

Robb Stark's army marched south and defeated the westermen at the battle of the Camps; Ser Forley Prester led the survivors south of the Red Fork.

Returning from Storm's End, Lady Catelyn Tully crossed the Red Fork at a ford south of Riverrun.

Ser Edmure Tully fortified the river to keep Lord Tywin Lannister's forces from crossing it, and the rivermen went on to defeat the Lannisters at the fords.

Brienne of Tarth, Ser Cleos Frey, and Ser Jaime Lannister followed the bank of the Red Fork south of Riverrun, on their way to the Posada del Hombre Arrodillado.

Soon after, Lord Hoster Tully died, and his body was sent downriver on a funeral pyre lit on the Red Fork itself.

During the siege of Riverrun, Emmon Frey and Forley Prester camped south of the Red Fork, while Ser Raynard Ruttiger and Ser Manfryd Yew commanded the castle guard to keep anyone from escaping.

Shortly before Riverrun surrendered, Ser Brynden Tully escaped by swimming under one of the portcullises of the Water Gate and vanished downriver, along the Red Fork itself.

The Red Fork rises in the hills near Valdecuerno and Cuevahonda, in the Tierras del Oeste, and runs northeast past the Castillo de la Princesa Rosada to Riverrun, where it meets the Tumblestone. From there it continues east until it joins the Trident.

Its course is wide and slow, full of bends and wooded islets, with sandbanks and drifting logs; upstream of Riverrun it narrows, darkens, and grows muddier. South of the Posada del Hombre Arrodillado it widens again, with banks of mud and reeds.

The Seto de Piedra stands south of the river and east of Riverrun; the Árbol de los Cuervos lies north of the Red Fork. The lands of House Bracken stretch along its whole bank.
