Cleos Frey

Ser Cleos Frey is the eldest son of Lord Emmon Frey and Lady Genna Lannister, making him a nephew of Tywin Lannister. Married to Jeyne Darry and father of two young sons, his mother's blood outweighs his father's name once the War of the Five Kings begins: he takes up arms for the Lannisters, and that same kinship later turns him into a messenger between warring sides.

Chapter 1

The cousin who fought for the lions

Books only

Cleos bore the twin towers of House Frey quartered with the Lannister lion on his shield, and when war came he chose his mother's side. He was married to Jeyne Darry and already had two young sons, Tywin and Willem, when he took up arms alongside his kin.

He fought beside Jaime Lannister and was taken captive with him when Robb Stark's forces surprised the Lannister host at the Battle of the Whispering Wood.

Chapter 2

The messenger between Riverrun and King's Landing

Books only

As a prisoner of useful blood, Robb Stark sent him to King's Landing carrying a peace offer that demanded, among other things, the North's independence; along the way, the mere sight of Grey Wind was enough to unsettle him. He returned with a counter-offer from Tyrion Lannister, then acting Hand of the King, escorted by Lannister guardsmen as cousin to both the queen and the Hand. On that same journey he carried Lord Eddard Stark's bones to Riverrun.

The peace mission concealed a trap he knew nothing of: four men posed as his escort to try to free Jaime from his cell at Riverrun. The plan failed, Jaime was moved to the dungeons, and Cleos, unaware of the ruse, ended up locked in the same tower cell his cousin had occupied before him. Catelyn Tully had a jug of wine sent to him before questioning him.

In this chapterBrienne Tarth

Catelyn Tully freed him to escort Jaime Lannister alongside Brienne of Tarth. With Ser Robin Ryger on their heels, Cleos protested when Brienne refused to stop at the Inn of the Kneeling Man.

Between Maidenpool and Darry, outlaws armed with bows ambushed them. An arrow struck him, his horse bolted, and it trampled him as he died. Few mourned him, neither his parents nor Jaime himself, who later took up his sword to fight Brienne.
