Jonos Bracken

When Catelyn Tully thinks of her father's bannermen, Jonos Bracken's name comes up among the oldest and most trusted. That old reputation for loyalty is the first thing known about him, before the war starts to sour his mood.

Once the siege of Riverrun is lifted, Jonos does not linger with the Tullys: he heads back to his own seat, Stone Hedge, making clear his loyalty has a geographic limit.

The peace does not last. Lannister forces raze Stone Hedge, and Jonos leaves Riverrun to try to take it back himself.

The fight for the castle costs him: he comes out wounded, and his nephew Hendry dies in the attempt. The war has stopped being something that happens somewhere else.

When Lord Hoster Tully dies, Jonos is one of seven lords who carry his body at the funeral, a gesture that confirms the place he still holds among the great riverlands bannermen.

Then comes the Red Wedding, and with it a pardon from the Iron Throne: Jonos walks away unharmed from a massacre that drags others to their graves.

With the realm crippled by war, Jonos lays siege to Raventree Hall, seat of the Blackwoods, his lifelong enemies.

Lord Karyl Vance rushes to beg Ser Jaime Lannister to step in: he knows Tytos Blackwood well enough to be sure he will never surrender to a Bracken, however long the siege drags on.

Jaime arrives at Stone Hedge as the siege is winding down, and finds Jonos in bed with a woman named Hildy, more interested in that than in the victory in front of him.

Even so, Jonos hasn't lost his appetite: he hands Jaime a map marked with the lands he claims from the Blackwoods and demands compensation for what Ser Gregor Clegane did to him — the stolen harvest, the burned castle, a raped daughter. He suggests, none too subtly, taking Tytos Blackwood's only daughter hostage, knowing how much it would hurt him. Jaime chooses a son instead, Hoster.

When Tytos finally surrenders, Jaime gives Jonos only a small part of what he asked for, and on top of it demands he send one of his five daughters as a hostage to King's Landing. Jonos does nothing to hide his anger.
