When the Dance of the Dragons set the Riverlands ablaze, the old feud between the Blackwoods and the Brackens hardened into a war front: the former for Queen Rhaenyra, the latter for her half-brother Aegon II. The Capture of Stone Hedge was one of the earliest blows of that war, and it showed early on that no lord could empty his castle of soldiers without paying for it.

Amos BrackenAs soon as the war broke out, Lord Samwell Blackwood declared for Rhaenyra and sent riders to raid Bracken lands. Lord Humfrey Bracken, siding with Aegon II, answered by sending his son Ser Amos out with a sizeable force to strike back.
The retaliation went badly for the Brackens: Amos fell at the Battle of Burned Mill, and it was Ser Raylon Rivers who had to gather the survivors and lead them back toward Stone Hedge.

The empty castle

Daemon TargaryenThose returning with Raylon found no home left to defend. While the Bracken strength was away, Prince Daemon Targaryen had reached Stone Hedge mounted on his dragon Caraxes, leading troops from Houses Darry, Frey, Piper, and Roote.
With the castle nearly emptied of swords, the taking was swift. Humfrey ended up a captive along with his remaining children, his third wife, and his lowborn mistress. When Raylon finally arrived, there was no fight left to give: he yielded to Daemon, and with that surrender any advantage the Greens had held in the Riverlands went out.
