Maegelle Targaryen

Maegelle Targaryen was one of the daughters of King Jaehaerys I and Queen Alysanne, and she gave up life at court to wear the robes of a septa of the Faith of the Seven. Her renown came not from a sword or a crown, but from her gift for healing and the patience she showed toward those no one else would touch.

Even tucked away in Oldtown, she remained the voice her parents listened to when they had stopped listening to each other: more than once, she was the one who brought the king and queen back to speaking terms.

Chapter 1

The quiet princess

62–73 ACBooks only

In this chapterJaehaerys I Targaryen

Maegelle was born in 62 AC in King's Landing, the sixth child of King Jaehaerys I and Queen Alysanne among a long line of siblings. She first grew attached to her sister Alyssa, who tolerated her more out of duty than affection, and later, once Daella was born, became the devoted elder sister herself. Even as a small child she was known as gentle, generous and quick-witted, happier with a book than with the bustle of court.

In 73 AC, at just ten years old, it was announced she would enter the Faith of the Seven as a novice. The decision was her mother's, who wanted to give one daughter back to the Mother in thanks for so many children; Maegelle, who already read The Seven-Pointed Star every night, accepted eagerly.

Chapter 2

The sister of the Faith

73–85 ACBooks only

As a novice and later a septa, she earned a name for compassion and healing hands, tending the sick with a devotion few septs could match. When her mother considered sending Daella to the Faith as well, since no husband suited her, Maegelle spoke plainly: she loved her sister, but Daella could barely read a prayer, and the Faith would not take her out of kindness.

In 84 AC she was given the task of instructing her young sister Saera, sent to Oldtown as a novice of the Silent Sisters. A year and a half later Saera fled the motherhouse for Lys, leaving Maegelle's teaching unfinished.

Chapter 3

The one who made peace between kings

88–94 ACBooks only

Three years after Saera's flight, the septa asked leave to quit the sept and join her mother: Alysanne had lost three daughters in a short span and was grief-stricken. She spent a few months in King's Landing before returning to Oldtown.

In 89 AC her father visited her while passing through the Reach, and Maegelle did not hold back her opinion of the quarrel her parents had carried for a year: she reminded him that Rhaenys's wedding was near and both of them were expected, at peace. A fortnight later the king returned to King's Landing and the queen left the exile she had imposed on herself at Dragonstone.

The peace did not last: in 92 AC Jaehaerys named a son heir ahead of his granddaughter, and Alysanne clashed with him again over what she saw as an injustice. It was Maegelle once more who, in 94 AC, brought her parents back together.

Chapter 4

The final years

94–96 ACBooks only

She spent her last two years caring for sufferers of greyscale, especially children, as the disease slowly stiffened her own arms and legs. She died in 96 AC.
