Rhaenys Targaryen was one of the three wives of King Aegon I Targaryen and, together with him and Visenya, one of the three dragonriders who carried out the conquest of the Seven Kingdoms. Her death, and that of her dragon Meraxes, took place during the campaign against Dorne and marked the end of the first Dornish war in its initial form.

Chapter 1

The fall over Hellholt

Queen Rhaenys flew over Hellholt mounted on Meraxes as part of the first Dornish war. From the castle walls, the Dornish defenders had a scorpion loaded with iron bolts trained on the sky.

One of those bolts struck Meraxes, who fell with her rider. The dragon died on the spot and Rhaenys did not survive the fall. The atlas material gives no further detail about the fighting or who operated the scorpion.
