Aegon's Landing

Before setting sail, Aegon Targaryen gathered at Dragonstone the lords who had joined his cause. On the seventh day of that gathering, ravens went out across the Seven Kingdoms carrying one message: from then on there would be only one king on the continent, and it would be him.

The night before they left, Aegon prayed in the island's sept alongside his sisters Visenya and Rhaenys. At dawn they sailed with a fleet whose size no one agrees on anymore; the accounts range from a few hundred men to as many as three thousand.

The ships reached an undefended river mouth. By a coincidence the old accounts never fail to mention, Aegon came ashore on the very day Harren Hoare, lord of the isles and the rivers, finally moved into his vast, newly finished stronghold, Harrenhal.

When word reached Oldtown, the High Septon shut himself inside the Starry Sept and spent a full week in prayer. On the highest hill by the river, Aegon had a wooden fort raised, Aegon's Fort, while he sent Rhaenys to Rosby and Visenya to Stokeworth.

Aegon came through what the old accounts call his First Trial, and once the river mouth was secure he had himself crowned at Aegon's Fort as king of all Westeros and shield of his people.

Crowned now, the new king left behind the fort that bore his name and marched into the Riverlands after Harren the Black. What had begun as a landing turned into a campaign that dragged on for more than two years.

When it was over, the High Septon anointed Aegon king in Oldtown. Six of the Seven Kingdoms now answered to his crown; only Dorne stayed apart, out of his reach.
