First Battle

Primera prueba

First Battle is the name given to the first armed clash the Targaryen invaders met just after landing in Westeros, when the lords of the Blackwater rode out to stop them.

It was also the first time a dragon saw combat on the continent, and its outcome would decide whether the invasion pressed on or drowned before it truly began.

Chapter 1

The march of the Blackwater lords

Aegon Targaryen had landed shortly before at the mouth of the Blackwater, together with his sisters, his vassals, and some 1,600 men, along with the family's three dragons. On the highest hill they raised an earthwork and a wall they named Aegonfort.

The lords nearby, among them the Rosbys and the Stokeworths, submitted without a fight. Darklyn of Duskendale and Mooton of Maidenpool did not — the two richest lords of the region joined forces and marched south with three thousand men, determined to drive the newcomers back into the sea.

Chapter 2

The first test

Aegon split his response: he sent Orys Baratheon to cut them off on the road while he himself came down on them astride the Black Dread. The fight was uneven, and both lords died in it.

Their heirs surrendered their castles at once. Duskendale was then the busiest port on the narrow sea in Westeros, fattened by trade, and Visenya forbade her men from sacking it — though she wasted no time claiming its riches for herself, which swelled the conquerors' coffers.
