Matarys Targaryen

Matarys Targaryen was the second son of Prince Baelor Targaryen and Lady Jena Dondarrion, one more step in the line to the Iron Throne then held by his grandfather, King Daeron II. At court they called him the Prince Even Younger, some jester's play on the nickname his father already carried.

Chapter 1

The Prince Even Younger

Books only

As the second child of Daeron II's heir, Matarys held a place in the line to the Iron Throne, behind his father and his elder brother Valar. His title, Prince of the Seven Kingdoms, came from that closeness to the crown.

Little else is remembered of him beyond one trait: a sweet boy.

Chapter 2

The plague that erased a line

209 ACBooks only

In 209 AC Prince Baelor died during the Ashford Tourney. Soon after, the Great Spring Sickness swept across Westeros, and Matarys fell ill.

He died in King's Landing, along with his brother Valar and their grandfather, King Daeron II, all claimed by the same plague. Those three deaths closed off Baelor's branch of the succession, and the throne passed to Aerys I Targaryen.
