High Septon
Septón Supremo
This High Septon was a younger brother of Lord Donnel Hightower of Oldtown, and in time he rose to the highest seat of the Faith of the Seven, during the reign of Jaehaerys I Targaryen.
His appointment was not the first path considered for him: it came only after the man first chosen, the septon Alfyn, died in old age.
Chapter 1
The feast at Oldtown
54 ACBooks only
In 54 AC the reigning High Septon died, and King Jaehaerys I Targaryen flew with Queen Alysanne to Oldtown to settle the succession with Lord Donnel Hightower.
Lord Donnel wanted the office to go to one of his own blood: among his kin he counted a younger brother, two nephews and six cousins already ordained as septons, plus another brother, a nephew and two cousins seated among the Most Devout. The king had no objection to a Hightower taking the crown, so long as he upheld the Doctrine of Exceptionalism, and the bargain was sealed with a great feast.
That younger brother of Lord Donnel — the same man this page is about — was one of the candidates the Hightowers put forward that year at Oldtown.
Chapter 2
Alfyn's heir
Books only
The man chosen in 54 AC was the septon Alfyn, already an old man. When he died, the crown finally passed to a Hightower: Lord Donnel's younger brother became the new High Septon.
