Robert Baratheon died in the year 298 after the Conquest, eighteen years into his reign, from wounds inflicted by a boar during a hunt. His death left the throne in the hands of an heir whose legitimacy was contested at once, and lit the fuse of the war that would pit five claimants against one another for the Seven Kingdoms.
