Aerys I Targaryen was crowned in the year 209, in the middle of the Great Spring Sickness, the plague that claimed King Daeron II only hours after killing two of his grandsons.
The throne fell to Aerys because his elder brother, Prince Baelor, had died months earlier in a tourney. With the crown came a queen, Aelinor Penrose, and a new Hand of the King.

The sickness sweeping the Seven Kingdoms made no distinction between commoners and royal blood: it took King Daeron II only hours after killing two of his grandsons, Princes Valarr and Matarys. The rightful heir, Prince Baelor, was no longer there to take the crown either — he had fallen months earlier in a trial by combat during a tourney, struck down by his own brother Maekar.
The throne passed instead to Aerys, Baelor's younger brother, crowned Aerys I Targaryen. His wife, Aelinor Penrose, became queen at his side. For the post of Hand of the King, Aerys chose Brynden Rivers.
