Siege of Pyke

Asedio de Pyke

The Siege of Pyke was the battle that ended the Greyjoy Rebellion, when forces loyal to King Robert Baratheon took House Greyjoy's stronghold in the Iron Islands.

The defeat sealed Balon Greyjoy's submission and left his son Theon a ward of House Stark, a bond that would later shape the relationship between the two houses.

Chapter 1

The final assault

289 ACBooks only

When King Robert and Lord Eddard Stark arrived with their host, the ironborn found themselves outnumbered ten to one. The royalist forces kept Pyke under siege for a time before launching the final push against its walls.

In the last assault, the red priest Thoros of Myr cut a way through a breach in the wall with his flaming sword, followed close behind by Jorah Mormont, lord of Bear Island. Eddard Stark and Jaime Lannister fought among the foremost. Maron Greyjoy, Balon's second son and heir since the death of his brother Rodrik, died when a tower collapsed during the fighting.

Chapter 2

Balon's submission

289 ACBooks only

With the rebellion crushed, Balon Greyjoy yielded, and the king took him back into his peace on one condition: his last living son, Theon, only eight years old, would be held as a ward by House Stark as a pledge of good behavior.

The victory strengthened Robert's hold on the throne, only a few years after he had overthrown the Targaryens. Jorah Mormont was knighted by the king himself in recognition of his valor during the assault.
