The Trial of Seven at Ashford was a judicial combat held in 209 AC at the castle of House Ashford, where an accusation against Ser Duncan the Tall grew into a duel of seven champions on each side.
It pitted members of House Targaryen against each other on the same field, and its outcome made that year's tournament at Ashford one of the most remembered episodes in the Reach's recent history.

During the tournament held at Ashford, Ser Duncan the Tall found himself facing an accusation that would have to be settled with steel. What began as a challenge between two men grew until it became a trial of seven champions on each side.
Standing with Duncan were Lyonel Baratheon, Humfrey Beesbury, Humfrey Hardyng and Raymun Fossoway, alongside two Targaryen princes. On the other side, Aerion Targaryen gathered men from Houses Crakehall, Fossoway and Wylde. The royal line itself ended up split between the two sides of the fight.

The price of the verdict

The combat ended with Duncan the Tall cleared of the accusation against him. But the verdict came at a cost: Prince Baelor, Hand of the King, along with the knights Humfrey Beesbury and Humfrey Hardyng, fell in the fighting on the side that had defended Duncan.
Ashford has been tied to that tournament ever since, remembered not only for the trial itself but for what it cost the royal family.
