Battle of the Mander

batalla del Mander

The Battle of the Mander was the naval clash that, near the end of Robert's Rebellion, pitted the Iron Islands fleet against Reach ships at the mouth of that river.

The ironborn won the day, but at a cost that would shape their house's course in the years that followed.

The price of neutrality

In this chapterBalon Greyjoy

Quellon Greyjoy had kept the Iron Islands out of the war. Word of Rhaegar's death reaching Pyke shifted his sons' mood: if they didn't join the rebels soon, they'd miss out on any plunder. Still, with Casterly Rock's Lannisters yet to declare themselves, Quellon held back most of his fleet and sent only fifty longships against the Reach's shores.

Those ships harried the coastline, sinking and seizing vessels, raiding towns and villages that offered little resistance.

Chapter 2

The ambush off the Shield Islands

283 ACBooks only

At the mouth of the Mander, longships from the Shield Islands met the ironborn fleet head-on, catching them by surprise. Twelve ironborn ships were sunk or captured, yet it was the defenders who broke: the victory went to the Iron Islands.

Lord Quellon Greyjoy died in the fighting.

Chapter 3

An heir returns to Pyke

In this chapterTywin Lannister

Balon Greyjoy, Quellon's eldest son, now had the Seastone Chair to claim, and that mattered more to him than continuing the campaign. With his return to Pyke, the Iron Islands' contribution to the rebellion faded almost as fast as it had begun.

While the ironborn fought off the Reach, Tywin Lannister chose to join the rebels and ordered the sack of King's Landing.
