Aenar Targaryen
Aenar Targaryen was the dragonlord who moved his family out of Valyria before the Doom, at a time when no one outside his own household believed destruction was coming.
His decision to relocate wealth, slaves and dragons to Dragonstone turned a minor line of the Freehold into the only house of dragonlords to survive the disaster and take root in Westeros.
Chapter 1
A minor dragonlord
Books only
Within the Valyrian Freehold, Aenar was no great figure among the dragonlords: his power was modest next to other families, though he held lands and slaves both on the peninsula and in the Long Summer Lands.
He kept several wives at once, Elaena among them, and had children with them.
Chapter 2
Daenys's dream
Books only
Twelve years before the Doom of Valyria, his daughter Daenys dreamed that the entire peninsula would burn and vanish. Aenar believed her: he sold everything he owned in Valyria and the Long Summer Lands and carried his wives, brothers, kin, children, slaves and the family's five dragons — Balerion among them — to Dragonstone.
Back in Valyria, his rivals read no warning in it, only surrender: to them, leaving was proof that Aenar no longer counted among the dragonlords.
Chapter 3
Lord of Dragonstone
Books only
Aenar ruled Dragonstone as its lord until his death. His son Gaemon succeeded him, and with that succession the house that had counted for so little in Valyria settled in as the only family of dragonlords left in the world.
