Daenys Targaryen

Twelve years before Valyria burned, Daenys had a dream that left her certain the city and its empire were doomed. She told her father, Aenar, and he didn't hesitate: he gathered the family and the five dragons they owned and took them to Dragonstone, a volcanic rock in the middle of the narrow sea, far from the Freehold.

Houses allied to the Targaryens, such as the Velaryons and the Celtigars, followed the same path and settled on other nearby islands. In Valyria, where no one else seemed to take a girl's vision seriously, the flight was read as an act of cowardice.

Daenys set down what she had seen in a book called Signs and Portents, gathering her visions and describing in detail the fall of Valyria. The original text has been lost for centuries, and no one today knows for certain what else it contained.

Archmaester Marwyn claims to have found three pages of that work and included them in his own Book of Lost Books, though there is no way to confirm whether they are genuine.

Daenys married her own brother, Gaemon, later called the Glorious, and ruled Dragonstone at his side for years. They had at least three children: Aegon, Elaena, and another daughter whose name has not survived.

When the couple died, their elder sons inherited the lordship of the island, while the younger daughter married a lord of little standing and was left out of the succession.

Seven generations after Daenys, a descendant of hers through the line of that younger daughter put forward her own claim to the Iron Throne during the Great Council of 101 AC. Her claim, however, was set aside in favor of other candidates.

It was the only moment when the line born of the marriage between Daenys and Gaemon resurfaced in the kingdom's politics, centuries after the two of them had ruled together on Dragonstone.
